Contact Lenses Q & A

What can I expect during a contact lens fitting?

Dr. Whitlow will perform a comprehensive eye examination to test your visual abilities and to determine the correct prescription strength for you. Dr. Whitlow will also check your overall eye health to ensure you’re a good candidate for contact lenses.

Contact lens exams differ from routine eye exams in several ways. First, Dr. Whitlow must take extra eye measurements to ensure a good fit for your contacts; he will do this by measuring the curvature of your cornea and the size of your pupil.

You will also undergo a tear evaluation, where Dr. Whitlow will measure the quality of your tears to ensure they are adequate to keep your eyes and contact lenses moisturized and comfortable.

What options are available in contact lenses?

While many people can successfully wear soft contact lenses to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, Dr. Whitlow will determine the best type of contacts for your needs. Besides soft lenses, Dr. Whitlow may prescribe special corrective contacts, like gas permeable lenses, to correct astigmatism and other vision issues.

If Dr. Whitlow recommends gas permeable lenses -- a durable contact lens type made of flexible plastic -- you will wear the lenses during the day and must remove them at night before you go to sleep.

Soft contact lenses are available in several varieties, including:

  • Daily wear
  • Disposable
  • Extended wear
  • Bifocal and multifocal
  • Ortho-K

Based on your specific needs, Dr. Whitlow can determine which is the best solution to correct your vision and ensure your comfort while using contact lenses.

What are cosmetic contact lenses?

Contact lenses can correct several minor cosmetic flaws, such as eye color irregularities, or for changing the natural color of your eyes. Dr. Whitlow can recommend the right cosmetic contact lens option to help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

How often do I need a contact lens exam?

Dr. Whitlow recommends annual contact lens exams for both children and adults to monitor the health of your eyes and the effectiveness of your contacts.

If you wear contacts and have other eye issues, such as dry eye syndrome, Dr. Whitlow may want to see you more often. You may also need more frequent eye exams if you have medical issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, or have a family history of eye disease.
