Eye Exam Q & A

How often do I need an eye exam?

Dr. Whitlow evaluates your medical history and your family history to determine how often you should schedule a visit. If you have otherwise healthy eyes, Dr. Whitlow recommends comprehensive eye exams every two years for both adults and children.

You may need a yearly eye exam if you have existing eye conditions such as glaucoma, vision loss, or suffer an eye injury.

Whitlow Family Vision Centers also offers emergency eye exams to evaluate and treat injuries and other serious vision issues, including sudden vision loss.

What happens during an eye exam?

There are three parts involved in a comprehensive eye exam, these include:

Vision testing

Dr. Whitlow evaluates your visual acuity using a wall chart and reading chart. If you’re having vision issues, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, Dr. Whitlow may prescribe corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Eye function testing

Dr. Whitlow also performs various tests to evaluate the functionality of your eyes, checking depth perception, peripheral vision, color vision, eye muscle movements, and responsiveness to light. These tests ensure your eyes are working correctly. They might also identify underlying conditions affecting your ability to focus correctly.

Eye health

The final part of a comprehensive eye exam involves an evaluation of your overall eye health. Dr. Whitlow inspects the internal parts of your eyes using a bright light and magnifying lens. For this part of the exam, Dr. Whitlow administers eye drops that dilate your pupils. That allows him to view your internal eye structures and test the pressure in your eye to rule out glaucoma.

What if I need eyeglasses or contacts?

At Whitlow Family Vision Centers, Doctors Whitlow offer an extensive selection of fashionable eyeglass frames to enhance your natural features. The staff works closely with you to find the best frames for your face shape and your budget.

You can also order your soft and gas permeable contact lenses in-office, including specially designed multifocal and bifocal contact lenses.
